A collision between a local passenger train and a freight train occurred late Thursday night at Shaktigarh station in Burdwan district. Fortunately, there were not many passengers onboard, and the driver of the local train, named Kevin, was the only one in the affected compartment. No injuries were reported.
According to sources, both trains had diverted onto the same track, and despite the timely application of brakes by both drivers, a collision was unavoidable. One compartment of the freight train and the driver's compartment of the local train derailed as a result. The incident caused disruption to train services on the Howrah-Burdwan main and cord lines.
The railways have yet to issue an official statement on the incident. However, reports indicate that several trains have been halted due to the accident. The down Shaktipunj Express has been standing at Asansol station since Wednesday at 12:54 pm, the down stop passenger at Galsi station since 10:21 pm, the down Kumbh Express at Madhupur station in Jharkhand since 10:54 pm, the down Mithila Express at Chittaranjan station since 11:30 pm, and the down Jodhpur Express at Parasnath Railway station in Jharkhand since 4:34 pm. The down Shipra Express is also halted at Dhanbad station at 3:55 pm.
Additionally, local trains between Howrah and Burdwan have been disrupted and are terminating at various stations before reaching their final destination, causing inconvenience to passengers.
